I have always really enjoyed baking bread. It wasn’t until recently, however, that time has been on my side as far as learning to make more labor-intensive baked goods. I have been teaching myself how to consistently and successfully make many different types of bread – regular loaves, quick bread, rolls, French bread, etc. (I will share many of these recipes and adventures with you over time!)
All bread is delicious in my opinion, but not all of it is realistic when you need it for a meal quickly. A lot of the time, I think about how homemade bread would taste great a little too late… like when the main dish is already cooking! “Oh, well. I guess it just wasn’t meant to be today,” is a possible response to such a situation.
This is when biscuits come to the rescue! The kind I am talking about can be incredibly easy and is made within minutes. Drop biscuits do not require any special tools or even any rolling pins. They do not require special techniques or extra time to rise. Drop biscuits simply need ingredients you probably already have in your pantry and fridge, and they can be doctored up to fit any meal! Perfect, right? I certainly think so.
There are many recipes out there for drop biscuits. This is one of my favorite variations that I have come up with – the biscuits come out great every time and they have a fun flavor to make them a little different than your everyday biscuit! I highly recommend trying different herbs and cheeses to make the flavor just how you want it to be too.
Herb and Cheese Drop Biscuits
Ingredients
- 1 cup bread flour
- ½ tbsp baking powder
- ½ tsp sugar
- ¼ tsp garlic salt
- ½ tsp dried chives
- ½ tsp dried parsley
- ¼ tsp dried oregano
- ½ cup shredded cheese
- ¼ cup butter, melted
- ⅓ cup milk
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 425° and spray a baking sheet with non-stick spray.
- Mix the dry ingredients together.
- Add the cheese to the dry ingredients and mix well.
- Add the melted butter and milk to the dry ingredients and mix just until a dough forms.
- Drop spoonfuls of biscuit dough onto the baking sheet, spacing them about an inch or more apart.
- Bake the biscuits for 9 minutes, or until they are beginning to turn golden brown.
Notes
- These biscuits have a mild cheese and herb flavor – to pump up the flavor, add more herbs and cheese.
- When the finished biscuits are topped with garlic butter, they taste just like Red Lobster’s famous biscuits!
