Easy Salisbury Steaks

When my husband lists his favorite dishes, salisbury steaks are always near the top of his list. I agree with him. If you have never had salisbury steaks before, they are basically seasoned ground beef patties smothered in gravy. I have heard them called hamburger steaks too. Whatever the name, don’t they sound wonderful? Although this dish may also sound simple (and it is!), salisbury steaks sure make for a delicious and hearty meal too!

I grew up with salisbury steaks and had them quite often growing up. They were part of one of the first full meals I remember making all by myself. I was home alone one evening as a teenager while my parents were with my brothers at their various sporting activities. When I got hungry, I determined that I would make myself a salisbury steak with mashed potatoes while they were gone. That is exactly what I did! So, in true teenager fashion, I only made enough for myself and I ate before everyone was back. My brothers were pretty incredulous when they came home to a house smelling amazing only to learn that there wasn’t any of the meal for them too. I did make up for that by cooking the dish for the whole family many times after that, though!

To make these salisbury steaks, you start off by gently mixing the ground beef mixture. The key during this step is to not overmix the ground beef, which helps you achieve a more tender cooked patty in the end. The salisbury steaks are then browned in a skillet – I recommend using a deep nonstick skillet with a lid for this! Then, you finish cooking the salisbury steaks in the savory brown gravy. You could also make the gravy from scratch, but using brown gravy mix makes this super easy and quick! My recipe yields more than enough gravy to generously smother the Salisbury steaks and mashed potatoes too. All in all, this is comfort food at its best!

I hope your family loves this recipe as much as mine! Enjoy!

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 egg
  • ¼ cup breadcrumbs
  • cup old-fashioned oats
  • ½ tsp Mrs. Dash Original
  • ½-1 packet onion soup mix, such as Lipton (adjust the amount to your taste preference)
  • ½ tsp dried chives
  • ¼ tsp garlic powder
  • 2 packets brown gravy mix
  • 2 cups water

Instructions

  • In a medium to large bowl, combine the ground beef, egg, bread crumbs, oats, and seasonings together. Mix just until combined – do not overmix.
  • Separate the mixture into 5 portions, and form a round and flat patty with each portion. I like to make the patties about ¼ to ½ inch thick.
  • Place the patties in a single layer in a non-stick skillet. If your skillet isn't non-stick, be sure to spread a little oil or nonstick spray in the pan before placing the patties in it.
  • Brown the patties in the skillet over medium heat. Once one side is browned, carefully flip the patties over to brown the other side.
  • While the patties are browning, mix the gravy mix and water in a bowl. Be sure to whisk out any clumps in the mix so you have a smooth gravy.
  • After both sides of the ground beef patties are browned, pour the gravy mixture over the patties in the skillet.
  • Allow the gravy to come to a boil, then turn the heat down to low or medium-low so the gravy is at a simmer.
  • Cover the skillet and allow to simmer for 10 to 15 minutes, or until the salisbury steaks are fully cooked and the gravy has thickened.
  • Serve and enjoy!
